Ducks and stuff

Wednesday, July 3

i got back from orientation yesterday, and i was pooped. i left on saturday, and rode the greyhound down to maryland. and my aunt and uncle picked me up and i stayed at their house. and we went out to eat mexican. food, not a person.
then on sunday my aunt and i rode the metro over to foggy bottom and checked in and stuff. and that went pretty smoothly. then she left and i was on my own. i walked around for awhile until the programs started. and the rest of day was fun-filled, kind of. most everyone was with their parents, which was weird. they had a parents' and sibling program if you wanted to bring your family, so their were a lot of whole families, which is quite unusual for college orientation. i met some people, but overall no one was really that friendly. that sucked, i hope it's just because of the parents being there, and being self-conscious and whatnot, and that it's different in the fall. i finally met my roommates at night. after small groups i went on the midnight monuments tour with other people and that was ok. too much walking! we sat on the steps of the lincoln memorial and stared. at the sky, the washington monument, etc.
sunday was mostly fun and exciting stuff, and monday was mostly academic advising and information programs. i went to some info sessions, got advising, picked classes, and practiced web registration. they were really freaking us out telling us that there was a good chance some of our classes might be closed, so we had to pick alternates. i was scared to death because i really wanted to have the schedule i planned, and couldn't imagine having it any other way. plus, some of the classes i wanted had only 1 section, so it would be more likely than the others to be closed already. so i went to sleep really really nervous.
on tuesday i woke up at 7:20. my registration time slot was 8:30, so i wanted to get there around 8. their policy was to let all the 8 o'clock people who were waiting in first, and then if there were no more 8s, they would let 8:30 people in if their were seats. so i got to the gelman library a little before 8 and i got in at 8, and that was really good. and i got all the classes i wanted!! none of my classes were full, so thank God for that! i'm taking 5 classes, 16 credits, and the kind of sucky thing is that i have class on friday. poo, but oh well. it's only a 9:30 latin class and a lab that's over before 2, so it's ok. it's not like i would really need that extra day of weekend.

so after the closing session i rode the metro to union station to wait for my train. i got there around noon and my train was at 3, so after i ate and i just sat there for a while. i couldn't walk around or anything because my duffel bag was soooo heavy and i was carrying a lot of stuff and i was alone. then i got on the amtrak and slept part of the way. i guess i was really tired or something, but for some weird reason i got off the train in trenton, which was the stop before my real stop, metropark. i got off the train and it didn't look too familiar. i asked this man if this was metropark and he was like, "no, this is trenton!" oops. but luckily, he works for the train company or something, so he brought me to the nj transit train and told the conductors standing there that i got off at the wrong stop and that i needed to get to metropark. so they gave me ticket and i hopped on. i got off at new brunswick and at that time my mom called. she was like, "where are you??" and i was like "uhh, new brunswick." i explained it to her and waited for the amtrak that came in about 5 minutes. and i explained my situation to the conductor, and he let me on. he was really nice because i showed him my ticket stub from the amtrak before, and he was ok with it. i think it's because metropark was the next stop anyway. so i got off and found my mom and she laughed at me and we went home. i've never gotten off at the wrong stop before, and i got myself all the way to new jersey and got off 1 stop early. so that was my adventure.

i got a lot of free stuff! they gave us a frisbee, pens, and a huge beach towel. and a "gw opoly" game. that was cool. and i bought a hippo magnet that's wearing a gw t-shirt and a pair of shorts- the shady ones with letters on the butt. =) so that was my weekend. i left a lot of stuff out, oh well. so the classes i'm taking are: latin, intro biology, calculus 32 (calc II: if i get the ap credit, if i don't i have to drop it and take calc 31), honors proseminar, and english 11 honors section. yay fun, i'm (almost) a college kid now.
